It is a peaceful Thursday evening, but underneath the surface, there is excitement. John is sitting down in front of his TV and he is ready to cheer for Hungary. He lives in the United States, but his great grandfather was a Hungarian, and he has kept his family surname Kovacs for that reason. He cannot speak a single word Hungarian, but he has heard that it is supposed to be one of the hardest languages in the world. John Kovacs has just returned from the fridge where he grabbed a cold glass of Fanta, and also brought along some leftover pizza from yesterday.
John has told his wife that he doesn’t want to be disturbed by the kids for the next hours, because this is a match he has been looking forward to for a long time. Hungary qualified for the European Champions in France in 2016, and by some giant miracle, they won their group. Unfortunately, they lost 4-0 against Belgium in the first match of the knockout stage. Can the Hungarians qualify for yet another European Championship in football?
The referee blows his whistle and the match has started. Both teams seems to be concentrated, and very defensive. They are all afraid to make mistakes, and after 30 minutes, John feels as if this is a match that will end with a penalty shootout. But, out of the blue comes a Bulgarian goal. John feels depressed, and based on what he has seen in the first half of the match, there is not much hope in him that the Hungarians will win.
60 minute has passed, and the Hungarians have had one shot on goal. But, John wouldn’t exactly call it a shot, because it was more like Adam Szalai kindly passed the ball to the Bulgarian keeper. But then, Roland Sallai, the Hungarian who normally plays for Freiburg in Germany, did something nobody expected. Instead of passing the ball to his teammates, he just ran like crazy, tricked a few Bulgarian defenders, and shot the ball towards the goal. 1-1. Hope has returned! John grabs some more to drink, and now he cannot wait for the match to continue.
After the goal, the Hungarians have turning into a different team. They are loaded with energy, and their spirits have been lifted. Now it is time to win the match.
As the referee blows the whistle after 95 minutes, the final score is 3-1 and Hungary is only one obstacle away from the European Championship in football in 2021. That match will be played against Iceland who just finished their game against Romania which they won 1-0 after a goal in the second minute.
