We have often seen popular VoIP services such as Skype, WhatsApp and Messenger blocked in other countries during political riots and during similar activities. Now Egypt is suffering from the same!
It has been reported by thousands of people in Egypt that services such as WhatsApp, Viber, Skype and Messenger have been working poorly, or not at all, during the last couple of days. It has not been confirmed by the government, or by the three big ISP’s in Egypt (Vodafone, Etislat and Orange), but it still seems to be a fact that something is not working the way it should.
What more and more Egyptians however discover, is how using a VPN can help avoid such blocks, and thus they can freely and easily using VoIP services, even though it is blocked from above. But, what is a VoIP service, really? It is an abbreviation for Voice over IP, meaning services that sends voice signals online. Skype might be the most popular VoIP service when it comes to longer phone calls, but when it comes to short messages Viber, Messenger and WhatsApp are extremely popular as well.
