Red Sea Diving Resort is another Netflix original that was released on July 31st in 2019. It stars Chris Evans (Captain America) in the main role, and his character will for sure bring many people to the screen. But, is Chris Evans enough to make this movie worth watching?
Little did I know before I started to watch Red Sea Diving Resort. I guessed that Chris Evans probably means that this is a movie with a budget and a potential. But, that was mostly it. And then I was suddenly served a movie that was based on real history about people helping Ethiopian Jews escape the country in order to get to Israel in the period between 1979 and 1984. It was a really brutal story, and lots of Jews were killed in camps, or while trying to escape. And that is when the Israeli government tried to bring as many Jews out from Ethiopia and back to Israel instead.
A group of agents opens a diving resort by the sea in Sudan. Here tourists can come and learn how to dive, but the main intention of the place is to smuggle Jews out of the country using the seaway by night. It is a risky business, and the local leader does his uttermost to kill any Jew that tries to escape, and also anyone willing to help those trying to escape. In other words, it isn’t easy, but the slogan is to never leave anyone behind. In other words, as long as there are people to save, these people will fight to bring them along.
Is Red Sea Diving Resort worth watching?
I like movies that make me interested in real history. It happened when I watch The Highwaymen on Netflix (the movie about Bonnie and Clyde), and it has happened watching many other movies. As a result, I do not at all regret watching the movie. Considering that I have read a Time article about what really happened since then, also emphasize how I have actually learned something and discovered something after watching the movie.
However, in itself, the movie wasn’t the best I have seen. It was almost boring at times, but I still wanted to see what would happen in the end. The passion of the local Ethiopian bringing the Jews to the diving resort was the most inspiring one in the movie, and I am glad they used a local actor to play this role.
I am not sure whether or not to recommend the movie. It is a great story about people sacrificing their lives to save others. But, if this was a normal movie not based on a true story (just fiction), I would probably go watch something else instead.
