Are you using STEPN already or are you planning to use STEPN in the future? Are you worried about whether the application will use all the data included in your cell phone package, or are you just curious about how much you should expect the application to use? In this article, we will share our very own experience which should make it easier for you to find out if you need to buy extra data or not in order to use STEPN.
Why is this important? If you use STEPN and are unable to connect to the Internet (as you do not have any data available or because you are not connected to a WiFi-network), the application cannot connect properly with the GPS and transmit data the way it should via the STEPN application. As a result, you will get error messages telling you that it is unable to connect. This is incredibly annoying, so you better be prepared for this before you start. This can also happen if you have disabled data on your phone (in order to not use it at home when you are supposed to use the local WiFi), and if you forget to turn it on, you will not earn any rewards while using STEPN. This might be an error just as annoying as the moonwalking error.
But, how much data is used by STEPN?
How much data will you use daily and weekly and monthly with STEPN?
I have done quite a lot of testing and I have used STEPN for one month myself right now. Based on my current calculation, there is a number that seems to be mostly quite correct.
- 10 minutes of usage = 1MB of data.
I believe the number above is quite close to the reality. It might be some differences, meaning that 10 minutes might sometimes use a little bit more data and sometimes less, but this is a quite good average.
What can we make of these numbers?
Data usage per day, week, and month with one sneaker
If you have one (common) sneaker, that is 2 energy per day, this is what you should expect.
- 1 day, 10 minutes = 1MB
- 7 days, 70 minutes = 7MB
- 30 days, 300 minutes = 30MB
Data usage per day, week, and month with three sneakers
If you have three sneakers, you will have 4 energy per day. This is what you can expect.
- 1 day, 20 minutes = 2MB
- 7 days, 140 minutes = 14MB
- 30 days, 600 minutes = 60MB
Data usage per day, week, and month with nine sneakers
If you have nine sneakers, you will have 9 energy per day. This is what you can expect.
- 1 day, 45 minutes = 5MB
- 7 days, 315 minutes = 35MB
- 30 days, 1350 minutes = 150MB
These are just approximate calculations, but they should help you get a feeling about how much data you will need in order to use STEPN regularly without trouble.
Do not forget that if you decide to listen to music from Spotify while running, or if you have other applications running in the background that uses the Internet as well, those might drain your data package. In other words, this is something you should be aware of.
How can I check how much data is used by STEPN?
If you have an Android phone, go to Settings, and you will find an option for data usage under “Connection and Sharing.” You can also search in your settings for Data Usage (if you cannot find it by normally looking through the menus).
There you should see the actual consumption of STEPN for your cell phone data. There you can also see which other applications use your data, so that might be interesting just for the sake of understanding which applications use the data in your data package.
I hope this article has helped you find an answer to your question. If you have experience and want to share how much data you normally use when walking or running with STEPN, please write a comment and let me hear from you.
