So far everything has followed the book in Euro 2016, but that was until June 14th. That was the day of surprises and it is hard to say whether the biggest surprise of them all was Hungary or Iceland.
The first match yesterday was played at 18.00 between Austria and Hungary and everyone believed beforehand that this would turn into a run over by Austria. They started the action quickly and hit the bar already after 30 seconds, but with time Hungary got more and more into the match and it turned out to be a quite even match. In the second half the Hungarian striker Adam Szalai who hasn’t scored a goal since 2014 suddenly did some great stuff and Hungary was in the lead. Then a few minutes later Austria got a red card, and three minutes before the end Hungary got one more goal scored by Zoltan Stieber. And instead of turning into an easy win for Austria the match actually ended with a surprising win for Hungary!
About an hour after the Austria vs Hungary match came to and end Ronaldo and Portugal made themselves ready to win easily against Iceland. Looking at the match they were by far the best team on the field and could easily have scored lots of goals, but it only became one goal scored by Nani after about 30 minutes.
In the second half, out of nowhere, Iceland suddenly scored a goal after a big mistake in the Portugal defense, and the result was 1-1 and after this Iceland fought with everything they had and eventually the match ended 1-1. The Icelandic team celebrated it as if they actually won the entire European Championship, while Ronaldo complained on the boring football Iceland played.
After the first round the group is totally open and anything can happen. What if Iceland and Hungary would end up actually winning the group?
